Fairfax County has completed their work on a map of good bike routes in in and around Fairfax. The map is available online and at the Fairfax County Government Center in paper format. The two links below are each half the map, and are extremely large .pdf files, so be on a high speed connection and be patient. They will open in a new browser window.
North Half of Fairfax County
South Half of Fairfax County
The maps cover all of Fairfax County, plus Fairfax City, Falls Church City, and even Arlington and Alexandria. The bike routes are divided into two categories based on how easy a particular road is for cycling. For instance in Fairfax City, Old Lee Highway is marked as an “unpreferred” route while most of University Drive is labeled a “preferred” route. This is a great tool if you want to safely bike in Northern Virginia.
